What IS Water Weigh

WATER WEIGHT! Two of the most dreaded words when dieting! You eat perfect all day just to learn you’ve GAINED weight! ARRGGGHH!!!

WHY does that happen and what can you do about it? I am not talking about chronic water retention brought on by medical conditions but the normal bloating that happens, believe it or not, usually because you haven’t drank ENOUGH water! Yes! Enough. 

“Water weight is real for some people,” says Katherine Zeratsky, a specialty nutritionist and dietician with the Mayo Clinic and coauthor of “The Mayo Clinic Diet.”

It may seem a bit backwards, but your body wants to store water when you’re dehydrated! If you’re not drinking enough, your salt to water ratio becomes unbalanced and your body will hang on to any extra fluids until the balance is restored… hence water weight gain. Water weight tends to magically melt away as your kidneys restore your body’s balance, hence the “Whoosh Fairy” myth!  

While there is no definitive amount of water that helps eliminate water weight gain it is generally accepted that one should drink (when actively looking to lose weight) 1/2 their body weight in fluid ounces of water per day.

Trick Yourself into Drinking MORE Water!

So how to do that? There are lots of ways to “trick” yourself into drinking more water. First off always keep a mug or bottle right at hand. Have one on your desk at work or on your counters and tables at home. Buy a Brita pitcher and keep it full in your fridge at all times! I bought myself this nice slim Brita that fits easily into any refrigerator, even when stuffed with food! The “trick” is to have ice cold water always at hand! After all who the heck likes it lukewarm? Lukewarm just doesn’t get drank!

Buy some straws or a mug outfitted with one. It’s a scientific fact that for whatever reason human beings just drink more fluid when they use a straw…so use one daily!

“Trick” yourself into thinking of water as something special! Serve it in a fancy glass OR when it’s time for cocktails serve it in a wine glass! Use a bit of citrus, zero-carb water enhancer or a tiny splash of sugar-free syrup to make it more palatable and trick your mind into thinking it’s that alcoholic alternative!

The whole point is to just drink MORE water so you don’t retain water and the consequential water weight! Yes, it does sound a bit backwards but it really works!
