Summer brings lots of picnics, parties and weddings and lots of cocktails! What can you drink and still stay on your low-carb diet? LOTS! My favorite is easy, spiced rum and Coke Zero, my hubby Michael loves a standard martini, both ZERO carbs! But for times we want something a little more “exotic” here’s a whole array of recipes!
Before we start in on the hows let’s discuss what will happen if and when you imbibe in any alcoholic cocktail, zero carbs or not… Just be aware that your body metabolizes alcohol differently than food. It will burn off the alcohol first before it returns to metabolize and burn off any food eaten with or since you drank that yummy drink. Some people might experience what we commonly refer to as a stall as a result. Others don’t. The only way to know what category you fall into is to give it a try. While I don’t recommend you have any alcoholic drinks in your first couple (sometimes referred to as induction) weeks of your new way of eating you can certainly enjoy a glass (or two!) at your upcoming parties with no regret!
Be aware that most “hard” liquor straight out of the bottle has zero carbs. You can Google any to get the skinny online. If you stick to diet, zero-carb sodas and mixes (you’ll find them everywhere including places like Home Goods or TJ Maxx) you are home free! It’s when you get into the fancier, multi-ingredient cocktails that the carbs start to add up. These recipes while they may not be zero carb (check each) they are very low carb and acceptable on any low carb diet.
At only 3 net carbs per glass these margaritas by All Day I Dream About Food are a hit any day of the year, NOT just on the 5th of May!
Not in the mood for a margarita? Then how about a cosmopolitan? This one is delicious and only has 2.5 net carbs!
One of MY favorite drinks is a mojito! I first discovered them in Mexico and they are traditionally made with lots of sugar. When you substitute a sugar substitute they are lower carb! I even have them made that way in Mexico now! Check out this mojito recipe to make them at home! Soon you’ll have a mojito (mint) garden like I do!
Another cocktail I love in summer especially is a pina colada! They are traditionally very high in carbs since they use sugar in the cream of coconut and pineapple juice. By using alternatives that give you the same great flavors without the carbs you can enjoy this amazing drink guilt free! Just be careful and don’t dress up your drink with all those high-carb fruits you might be tempted to nibble on!
Strawberry daiquiris are another favorite of many especially when fresh strawberries come into season! Here’s a recipe that will only gross you 3 net carbs per glass! Enjoy each and every sip!
A drink that is not as well known in the States but is very popular in Mexico is called a caipirinha. While traditionally and originally made from a cane sugar liquor from Brazil most people now substitute white rum, which is zero carbs. The traditional recipe will call for sugar along with limes but just by substituting a sugar free substitute (I use Splenda) you have a no-carb drink that is surprisingly refreshing around the pool! Here’s my recipe! ENJOY!
- ½ Lime
- 1 tsp to 1 TBSP sugar (Splenda) substitute as desired
- 2 ounces white rum
- Crushed ice
- Cut lime into 4 wedges
- Muddle the lime wedges in the bottom of a rocks glass with the sugar substitute.
- Add your white rum and crushed ice and serve!
