Last week I published an article dispelling the myth that you cannot eat cold cereal when following a low carb lifestyle. A number of you contacted me to ask if it is possible to enjoy hot cereals while dieting too. I am here to tell you YES!
Here’s some GREAT hot cereals you can enjoy on cold mornings that are all low carb so that you don’t blow your diet. First off there is this one that is so super simple you’ll wonder why you haven’t had it before:
- Stir all ingredients together.
- Place ¼ cup of mixture in a microwave-safe bowl with high sides.
- Add ½ cup water to the mix*
- Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
- Continue to stir and boil for at least two minutes, to thicken.
Recipe makes 4 servings. Store unused portion in refrigerator until use.
There are almost as many recipes for low carb hot cereal as there are imaginations to dream them up. Here are the best of the best and feel free to tweak them yourself!
First off we have a Flaxseed Hot Cereal recipe by Bonnie D at JustAPinch.com. Flax seed has just as much fiber as it does carbs so it always makes for very low carb results!
Karen of Living Low Carb adds in chia seeds, some unsweetened coconut and cinnamon for what she calls Instant Cinnamon “Oatmeal.”
Add maple and almonds to the mix and oh my goodness! You’ve got a wonderful meal that you are going to LOVE! That is exactly what LowCarb-Ology did for their Low Carb Maple Almond Hot Cereal and it is AWESOME!
No hot cereal roundup would be complete without this recipe from All Day I Dream About Food. Carolyn’s Grain-Free Hot Cereal is low on ingredients but big on taste!
Prefer something out of the ordinary every now and again? Check out these recipes from My Gluten Free Girlfriend! If you stick to unsweetened pumpkin in this Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie Paleo Oatmeal you’ll stay low carb. One ingredient that will make it extra yummy is what she calls Saigon cinnamon. At Penzey’s they call it Vietnamese cinnamon and I can vouch for the fact that it will make a BIG difference in your finished meal! The stuff smells amazing too!!! You may never go back to plain old cinnamon again. Ever.
OR try her chocolate Hot Cereal! Remember that from when you were a kid? Her Healthy Chocolate Brownie “Oatmeal” Sinfully Paleo, Gluten Free, and Low Carb IS sinful! I like using unsweetened Ghirardelli cocoa in these types of recipes to keep it as low carb as possible while having fully delicious chocolate taste.
Of course if you get in a pinch you can also buy low carb hot cereal. I have found that Netrition.com has the BEST prices I can find for all the low-carb items I cannot find locally. I keep a running list of what I want to order and then, using their super cheap $4.95 flat rate shipping I order about once a month or so. They have a GREAT high fiber hot cereal that comes in Apple Cinnamon, Butter Pecan, Strawberry and Vanilla Almond as well as plain.
So there you have it… you asked could you eat hot cereal and still stay low carb… well I guess I proved you can! ENJOY!
Which will you try first? Do you have a favorite low-carb hot cereal I didn’t mention? Tell us about it in your comment below!
