When on our Facebook group I often hear members saying that they feel parched, that they are STRESSED, feel tired, wake in the middle of the night to hop around with a charlie horse or that they have troubles in the bathroom. All of these symptoms are signs of Atkins or Atkins Induction “Flu.”
A low-carb diet naturally flushes water and sodium and other electrolytes from your body causing these symptoms and more! Is your spouse or colleagues complaining that you are irritable? Yep, that’s yet another symptom of “Atkins Flu!”
Here’s a good video by Kent Altena, a long-time low carber that explains what you are going through and why. Yes, the video is 8 years old but it is just as pertinent today as the day it was made!
So how do you combat Atkins flu? First off don’t wait until you experience the symptoms! No one likes to be jerked awake in the middle of the night with an excruciating pain in their leg or to have a skull-crushing headache. The culprit is SALT or a sodium imbalance! Be sure that you are liberally salting your food!
If that’s not enough to keep symptoms at bay the answer is just as simple! BROTH! Make yourself a big cup of vegetable, beef or chicken broth and make it SALTY! The saltier the better! Drink a cup or two a day. This will restore your sodium balance and make you feel so much better quickly! All your flu-like symptoms will disappear!
NOTE: Please use common sense! Do NOT do this if you take diuretics or you suffer from any medical condition that limits salt. Always consult your physician.
